It's not stunning skyline views you'll find here at Bartiquitos Lagoon, but great views of a different sort: outstanding views of the endangered birds that occupy these tranquil lagoons situated near the hustle and bustle of San Diego. Located in nearby Carlsbad and identified as one of the few remaining tidal wetlands in southern California, these lagoons are perfect for hiking and provide outstanding opportunities for bird watching. Interpretive signs along the trails assist with identifying these rare birds. Begin your hike at the lagoon's Nature Center.

OLD TOWN. Although this is not the quickest or most scenic route into Mexico, it is the most convenient and least expensive. Upon arrival at the San Ysidro station on the US-Mexico border, you can hop over to Tijuana, where you'll find festive Mexican food and colorful souvenirs. The Blue Line starts at the Old Town Transit Center, but you can embark at several locations, including near PetCo Park. The trip takes approximately 40 minutes.

CORONADO. The city of Coronado is located on an island-like peninsula just south of San Diego ­ you can drive via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, but it's more scenic to take the ferry from Broadway Pier. Once in Coronado, you'll find sparkling white beaches and a host of restaurants, quaint shops and hotels. Most of the activity is centered on the beach-fronting Ocean Drive and on Orange Avenue.

GASLAMP QUARTER. This 16-block section of downtown is a national historic district filled with specialty shops, art galleries and restaurants. Numerous theaters and nightclubs call the Gaslamp Quarter home, so there's plenty to do after the sun sets. It's also an excellent neighborhood for checking out some of the city's early Victorian architecture. Visit the William Heath Davis House, which has exhibits detailing Gaslamp history, to learn about the district's colorful past. 4th and 6th Avenues from Broadway to Harbor Drive.

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. This 1905 Arts & Crafts-style mansion was home to George Marston, one of the original developers of Balboa Park, Presidio Park and Junipero Serra Museum. The massive brick-and-stucco structure boasts impressive interior woodwork featuring redwood, oak and pine. Five acres of beautiful grounds are also part of the lovely estate. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Docent-led tours are available.
